Student & Guardian Visas
Student visa (subclass 500)
This visa allows international students to study full-time in registered courses in Australia. It covers various levels of education, including primary, secondary, tertiary, and vocational training. The visa is generally valid for the duration of the study course, plus an additional period after the course completion for graduation or further study.
Student Guardian visa (subclass 590)
This visa allows a person to stay in Australia as the guardian of an international student under 18 years of age who is on a student visa. The guardian can stay in Australia for the same duration as the student or until the student turns 18. This visa also allows the guardian to study for up to three months or study English for 20 hours per week.
Who Needs to Apply for an Australian Student Visa?
The Australian subclass 500 visa, also known as the Student Visa, is designed for any non-Australian citizen or permanent resident who wish to study full-time (more than 3 months) in a recognized education institution in Australia.
It allows you to stay in Australia for the duration of your course, with options to extend your stay if necessary.
Exceptions:
-
Short-Term Study (Less Than 3 Months): If you’re planning to study in Australia for a period shorter than three months, you may not need a student visa and could instead apply for a Visitor Visa (subclass 600) or a Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417 or 462), depending on your eligibility.
-
Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents: Australian citizens, permanent residents, and eligible New Zealand citizens do not require a student visa to study in Australia.

Key Features of the Student Visa
Duration: The visa is generally valid for the duration of your course, with some additional time after course completion. The exact length depends on the type of course and the duration of your study.
Work Rights: While studying, Student Visa holders are allowed to work up to 48 hours per fortnight during the academic year and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. This provides a great opportunity to gain work experience and support your living expenses.
Family Members: Your partner and dependent children can join you in Australia as secondary applicants on your visa. They will have the same visa conditions, including the right to work and study.
Pathway to Further Opportunities: Upon completing your studies, the Student Visa (Subclass 500) can serve as a pathway to other visas, such as the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), which allows you to work in Australia temporarily after graduation. You will still need to fulfill the requirements to apply for such visa.
